On Friday 6 June, in the newest of the school buildings, the Harrison Centre, we held our year Silver Reunion for the classes of 1998, 1999 and 2000. Celebrating 25 years since our former students were stomping the corridors here at Reigate Grammar School, they marvelled at our state of the art Sixth Former Centre, a new addition since they left at the turn of the century. It was fantastic to see so many return to greet each other with genuine joy and affection. They reminisced about days gone by and joked at how happy they were to see name badges in case the memory of a name slipped their mind.
With everyone sporting a drink in hand, Headmaster Shaun Fenton introduced himself, not as former Headmaster Dixon or Hamlin but in jest as the Headmaster no one knows here and offered his own joy at being part of a new era that will see their own return in years to come. With it always being their school and part of a global and connected community, the beauty of always being a Reigatian is the sense of belonging.
Jonny Hylton (RGS 1992-1999), Foundation Director and fellow Class of 1999 attendee warmly welcomed his old school friends with a trip to the past reminding everyone what life at the end of the 90s was like. With familiar faces such as Bo Selecta! And a labour government headed by Tony Blair, a few ‘curtain’ hairstyles and the classic Nokia (for anyone under 35 you might need Google to help here), we laughed at the inspiration project that was the Millenium Dome (again, for anyone that is unfamiliar with this, you’ll now know it fondly as a rather large telephone company concert venue…..)! We can’t believe 25 years have passed and it was brilliant to bring everyone together again for a night of fun and laughter.
The word on the street is that the celebrations continued on Reigate High Street late into the evening – but we couldn’t possibly confirm or deny this.
Thank you to all those who took time from their busy schedules to attend. To view the photos from our event, visit the Silver Reunion gallery.
