The 11th of November holds a special place in our calendar — a day to remember, reflect, and honour those who served and sacrificed. In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, we wear our poppies with pride, standing together in solidarity and gratitude for the courage, dedication, and resilience of those who fought for our freedom. This simple symbol reminds us of the cost of peace and the enduring legacy of those who gave everything so that future generations might live in hope and safety.
In a poignant and emotional service, RGS paid tribute to the brave men and women that have given their lives to protect us in times of conflict. To the brave men and women that continue to fight for our freedom and to those that live with the suffering caused by war.
Our guest speaker, invited to read the Act of Remembrance today was Commander Duncan Matthews MBE BSc MA Royal Navy (rtd) (RGS 1970-1978). Commander Duncan Matthews (RGS 1970–1978) served with distinction in the Royal Navy for 25 years as navigator, pilot, and commanding officer, earning the MBE. His service included UN operations in Cambodia and command of HMS Shetland and the Fishery Protection Squadron. He later pursued a distinguished career in industry and aviation. We are honoured that he was able to join us in our service of Remembrance.
‘The Last Post’, played by Jonathan F, signalled that the moment of reflection was near. During the two-minute silence, birds could be heard high overhead as the wind carried a gentle stillness across the playground. ‘Reveille’ then marked the end of the silence, and the RGS Polyphony sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Abide with Me’.
Once the students had departed, our party made their way to the Memroial Garden for a smaller service to lay a wreath and take a moment to rememember 4 RGS boys that sadly died in tragic circumstances in 1965, marking this as the 60th year.
We pause in this moment to remember, reflect, and give thanks for the freedoms we cherish and the lives we are privileged to live.
Thank you to everyone that attended our 2025 service and to our guest speaker, Duncan Matthews (RGS '78).
