A new book celebrates the golden era of rugby at Reigate Grammar School and the Old Reigatian RFC.
The book celebrates the most successful rugby period in the history of the school and the Old Boys, shining a spotlight on a remarkable period of 27 years of achievement on the pitch.
The Glory Years, written by Duncan Playford (RGS 1966–1974), chronicles the extraordinary period between 1961 and 1987 — a period widely regarded as rugby's golden age. Drawing on personal insight, detailed research and various archives, the book captures the spirit, camaraderie and competitive success that defined the club during these years.
Crucially, the book also acknowledges the foundations laid in the formative years between 1961 and 1976, when Reigate Grammar School enjoyed sustained rugby success and produced a generation of outstanding players. This period included the school’s famous 1st XV run of 57 unbeaten matches between 1969 and 1973, an achievement that not only reflected exceptional coaching and talent, but also provided the backbone for ORRFC’s later dominance. Many of those schoolboy players progressed seamlessly into senior rugby, carrying with them a winning mentality that would shape the club’s future.
The book explores a time when the school, and subsequently the ORRFC established themselves as formidable forces in the non-professional rugby landscape, driven by a unique blend of talent, teamwork and unwavering commitment. Duncan Playford (RGS ’74) brings to life the matches, personalities and moments that then shaped the club’s identity and left a lasting legacy for generations of players and supporters.
More than a record of results and silverware, 'The Glory Years' reflects on the culture of the club during this period and beyond — the friendships forged, the values upheld and the deep connection between the team and the wider Reigatian community. Former players, coaches and supporters feature prominently, offering a vivid glimpse into this sporting era.
Written to preserve an important chapter in the club’s history and to celebrate the people who made it so special, the book captures a unique time. Success on the pitch was matched by a genuine sense of togetherness, making it all the more important to record these moments before they were lost.
The launch of The Glory Years has been warmly welcomed by the Old Reigatian community, with many recognising it as both a nostalgic tribute and a valuable historical record. The book is expected to appeal not only to rugby enthusiasts, but also to anyone with an interest in sporting heritage and the enduring power of community sport.
The Glory Years is now available to purchase for £15.00, offering readers a compelling insight into a defining period that helped shape the identity and legacy of Old Reigatian Rugby Football Club. To purchase a copy, please email us and we will be happy to put you in touch with Duncan.
