I have always wanted to keep the door open to a wide range of interests and possibilities, and my career path reflects that mindset.

I began my career in KPMG’s Owner Managed Business division, training as a Chartered Accountant. This experience gave me the confidence to understand a broad spectrum of business issues, many of which are transferable across different industries and organisations.

Eager to apply this knowledge in a more hands-on way, I joined a family business in the linen-hire industry, supplying hotels and health clubs across London. Initially focused on growing the business, I gained valuable customer-facing experience and developed a strong understanding of consumer behaviour and marketing. The operational complexity of the business - with its machinery, logistics, and people - also provided an excellent environment in which to build my managerial skills.

One of the aspects I have always enjoyed most about working in a smaller business is the variety it offers. No two days are the same - from working on the ground with machinery to pitching for new business opportunities. After becoming Managing Director, my focus shifted to preparing the business for sale. Once that was successfully achieved, I took the opportunity to step back, start a family, and reshape my working life around my role as a parent.

Alongside my business career, art has always been a long-standing passion. I eventually decided to pursue this more fully, establishing myself as a gallery artist. Early on, I was selected as the featured artist for the New Artist Fair’s advertising, and I later secured an international art agent. Today, I sell my work both across the UK and internationally, and have expanded into product lines including bags, accessories, and homeware.

Now that my children are older, I have joined the RGS Foundation team, where I am developing a career in charity development alongside continuing my art practice.

Tracey's Top Tip

Never be afraid to try something new and always keep learning. I have always had many ambitions, but priorities evolve, and finding balance is an ongoing challenge. Having a clear vision of where you want to go - in all areas of life - and setting goals to get there is essential. This applies just as much in life as it does in business. It is also important to surround yourself with people who will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. Above all, do what you love - and if you don’t, be willing to change it.
