I never expected to become a garden designer. My background was in finance - a structured world of numbers and planning, seemingly far from the creativity of outdoor design. But looking back, every step of my journey led me here.
When I moved to the Surrey Hills, I fell in love with designing my own garden. The process - planning layouts, selecting plants and shaping the space - became more than just a hobby. I found myself completely absorbed in how gardens function, how they evolve over time and how small design choices can transform an outdoor space. That was my turning point and I knew I wanted to take it further.
Starting Scamells Garden Design was a leap into the unknown, but my finance experience proved invaluable. Skills like budgeting, project management and clear communication helped me navigate the challenges of running a business. I also realised that professionalism and transparency - so important in finance - were just as crucial when working with clients.
To build my expertise, I gained a professional qualification in garden design, giving me the technical knowledge to complement my passion. Learning never stops in this industry. Keeping up with trends, materials and ecological principles is key to success.
For anyone considering a career change, here are my key learning points:
• Your past experience is an asset - Transferable skills like organisation, communication and problem-solving are valuable in any industry.
• Invest in learning - Whether through courses, mentorship, or hands-on practice, knowledge builds confidence.
• Embrace uncertainty - Career shifts are rarely straightforward, but each step forward is progress.
Don’t wait until you feel fully ready to take the leap. Instead, start small - whether it’s a side project, volunteering, or taking on a few clients, real experience will teach you more than waiting ever will.
Starting Scamells Garden Design has been the most rewarding decision of my career. If you’re drawn to a new path, trust the process - passion, combined with learning and resilience, can lead to a fulfilling career.
