New Book Celebrates the Golden Era of Old Reigatian RFC

A new book celebrating one of the most successful and defining periods in the history of Old Reigatian Rugby Football Club has been launched, shining a spotlight on a remarkable decade of achievement on the pitch.

The Glory Years, written by Duncan Playford (RGS 1966-1974), chronicles ORRFC’s extraordinary era between 1974 and 1985 — a period widely regarded as the club’s golden age. Drawing on personal insight, detailed research and various archives, the book captures the spirit, camaraderie and competitive success that defined the club during those formative years.

The book explores a time when ORRFC established itself as a formidable force in the non-professional rugby landscape, driven by a unique blend of talent, teamwork and unwavering commitment. Duncan Playford (RGS '74) brings to life the matches, personalities and moments that shaped the club’s identity and left a lasting legacy for generations of players and supporters.

More than a record of results and silverware, 'The Glory Years' reflects on the culture of the club during this period and beyond, the friendships forged, the values upheld and the deep connection between the team and the wider Reigatian community. Former players, coaches and supporters feature prominently, offering a glimpse into this sporting era in time.

Written to preserve an important chapter in the club’s history and to celebrate the people who made it so special. This was a unique time for ORRFC, the success on the pitch was matched by a real sense of togetherness, and it feels  important to capture those moments before they were lost.

The launch of The Glory Years has been warmly welcomed by the Old Reigatian community, with many recognising it as both a nostalgic tribute and a valuable historical record. The book is expected to appeal not only to rugby enthusiasts, but also to anyone with an interest in sporting heritage and the enduring power of community sport.

The Glory Years is now available to purchase for £15.00, offering readers a compelling insight into a defining decade that helped shape the identity and legacy of Old Reigatian Rugby Football Club.
